A busy highway through northern Illinois will see some slower travel as a two-year construction project gets underway.

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Thursday that work will begin on Monday, May 5 on a project to repair the roadway and bridges along I-88 between the U.S. 30 interchange (exit 44) in Rock Falls and near the U.S. 30 spur interchange (exit 36) about eight miles away.

In this two-year, $26.8 million project, work in 2025 will involve patching and repairing bridges over Elkhorn Creek and Polo Rd. as well as removing the crossing over the abandoned Burlington Northern Railroad.

IDOT says this will involve controlling traffic with highway crossovers west of the U.S. 30 interchange and east of the Illinois 40 interchange (exit 41). Traffic will be down to one lane in each direction with access to all ramps remaining open.

This year’s work is expected to be done by the end of the year with all lanes opening back up over the winter.
