Dixon Rural Fire Chief Says Wind and Terrain Makes Brush Fires Tricky and Dangerous

A couple of weeks ago, two Lanark Firefighters were injured while battling a brush fire.  A week ago, three firefighters were injured dealing with a brush fire in Jo Davies County.

Any fire can be dangerous to battle.  However, brush fires can be particularly tricky said Dixon Rural Fire Chief Dustin Dahlstrom.  The weather and the wind can play a big part in the danger.

Dahlstrom said the terrain could also play a part in battling a brush fire.

Many times these fires could start along roadways, in farm fields or they are controlled burns that got out of hand.  Dahlstrom said sometimes a fire is thought to be out and the next day the wind re-ignites an ember.

He also stated trained individuals conduct the controlled burns at Nachusa Grasslands.  He was not sure if there were any classes a member of the public could attend, but if not, he said there should be.
